It’s not just a passing trend thing “green bandwagon.” It’s a call to action that will probably not go away until every possible resource has been tapped to make living as green as it can possibly get. Sp to make sure you’re ahead of the curve make sure that these ten easy tips are in place in your household so you can be free to spend time focused on efforts outside of your own residence.

  • Monitor your energy use and make adjustments such as adding a plug load monitor that can help you drill down on specifics to cut usage (and cost).
  • Install dimmer switches if you’re still a hold out and cannot part from incandescent bulbs so that at least some energy is saved by dimming the lights as little as ten percent.
  • Add a motion sensor to outdoor lights so they only come on when they are truly needed. Not only will you save energy when they’re not in use, but studies show that they detract burglars since they are taken by surprise when they come on usually resulting in them running away!
  • Set a programmable thermostat to not only save energy but save as much as 200 a year on your utility bill.
  • Make sure that a mat is placed by all exterior doors to capture dirt and toxins (from pesticides) before they enter your home and create more work and energy eliminating them.
  • Install an Energy Star rated ceiling fan that allows you to run the fan in reverse in cooler months to help push warm air down which can reduce your heater’s work load by as much as 10 percent.
  • Make sure that all windows and doors have permanent weather stripping installed to seal in heat and prevent icy gusts of wind from invading.
  • Install window treatments that are insulated to protect against heat loss.
  • Replace the aerator on all faucets for a more efficient one that will reduce flow and produce a huge return on conservation of water.
